This page is mainly my personal notes/reminders on little annoyances I've encountered using windows xp. If it's useful for you then I'm glad.

Restore Show Desktop Icon to Quick Launch on Taskbar

If the Show Desktop icon is deleted from Quick Launch, the procedure below will recreate the file.

Open Notepad and enter the following text:

[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop

Save the new file as Show Desktop.scf then drag and drop the icon on the Quick Launch bar or whatever location you want the shortcut to appear.

Windows Unison

I've recently been testing software to keep directories in sync under windows (and unix) and make use of 4 different laptops. I was struggling to keep the same data available on each laptop. I discovered Windows Unison … it makes use of the GTK+ environment. I downloaded the Windows binaries from http://alan.petitepomme.net/unison/index.html but I couldn't seem to get the gtk version of the program running. They advise you to install the GTK runtime from Pidgin but I had already been using that. After a bit, I discovered I needed to append C:\Program Files\Common Files\GTK\2.0\bin to the XP PATH envronment variable.

To change the system environment variables, follow the below steps.

1. From the desktop, right-click My Computer and click properties.
2. In the System Properties window, click on the Advanced tab.
3. In the Advanced section, click the Environment Variables button.
4. Finally, in the Environment Variables window, highlight the path variable in the Systems Variable section and click edit. Add or modify the path lines with the paths you wish the computer to access. Each different directory is separated with a semicolon as shown below.

C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\bin;C:\Program Files\Common Files\GTK\2.0\bin
